{the week that was}

sunshine and showers
a head cold which arrived to visit and hasn’t said goodbye
sniffling runny nose that is rubbed red with tissues
black mascara smudges under sunken streaming eyes
certainly not a good look
I would scare away small children and even bigger ones!
But the good news is
that because I was coughing, sniffling, snorting and sneezing
I didn't have much of an appetite and so am

***
Mittens our 16 year old pussycat is still hunting
we had a dead mouse on the doorstep one morning
(won't post a pic of that though)!!!

***
I'm excited because my peony has produced it's first bud in years
what am I doing wrong with this plant
I just don't know!!

Looking forward to the flower popping though
and will probably have you all bored to bits
with photos of it!

***
I treated  myself a new pair of  oven gloves
the old ones were an embarrassment
so thought I had better replace them
with something a bit more respectable

these are the pretties I got
I like the colours and the lovely flowers
now I will just have to start cooking
{well maybe later....}

***
I learned a useful tip too
if you put a copper coin into a vase of water
It will stop the flowers from drooping
so I tested it out with my tulips
and it really does work no hangy dangy sorry looking flowers!

Wishing you and your loved ones a week
filled with sunshine and happiness

Lovely photo's . Gorgeous cat and about the tulips, they grow in the vase so you cut them as soon as they get too tall, they will never hang then.

Hello Fiona! Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving your lovely note... and thank you for following! I will follow in return. I hope to see a pic of your peony when it blooms... the color looks enticing... my own peony has buds and i'm looking forward to the flowers!

Peonies don't like to be planted too deep; could that be a reason for just one bud? I hope you feel better soon, Fiona.
I like the oven mitts and the penny tip, by the way.

My oven mitts are trashed, too :( Sorry about your cold. I think you get more than your fair share in cold Ireland!

What a lovely post, made me smile on this rainy Sunday-morning (although the coughing and sneezing didn't sound like a good time!) Your new oven gloves are very pretty! I should get new ones, too. No cats in my house (I'd love to but I'm allergic to them) but I think I need to take the doggies out for their morning walk now. Have a wonderful day, and get well soon! :)

Hi Fiona, so sorry to hear you haven't been well, I do hope you are feeling better now. Good news about the weight loss though! My peony is temperamental too, and although it flowered the last 2 years there are none this year. Have a lovely relaxing Sunday. Oh and I loved all your shiney copper in a previous post, and well done to your son who's finished his exams. Love Linda xx

Hi Fiona! So many lovely photos for us to look at today! Love Mittens - gorgeous! Is that your home in the first picture? Do hope you will feel better very soon from your sniffles! I absolutely adore Peonies, and how exciting that you finally have a bud on yours. You must show us a photo in all its glory when the flower emerges! That was a good tip about the copper coin in the flower water. I will certainly be doing that in future. Miserable and dank here today :( Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Oh! I see that you found Southhamsdarling on facebook. I do find it's nice and easy to read posts directly from facebook I must admit. Byeeeeee!

Hope your nose stopped dripping! I am never that ill that I have no appetite... ;o) How nice to see your peonies start blooming! Please bore us with photos! I just love them and I also love your oven gloves. Even pretty in the kitchen - after all we are Ladies, aren't we? Let me tell you I am going to Ireland this summer on a home exchange basis and I am very, very much looking forward to that! Enjoy your Sunday evening! Christa

Dear Fiona, We are leaving Switzerland on July 24 and return on August 7. The village is near Tara Hill and is called Corey (it is about 5 miles south of Corey - if am remember right). The people from Corey will stay in our house here in Berne during that time. We have done this a few times before and I will soon post about it. I am really excited as I visited Ireland last in 1981 with my brother. I even once had an Irish boyfriend - but that was in another life... ;o)

I will not get bored seeing your peony progress! I love peonies but sadly our weather is too hot for them.

Sorry you have been under the weather but know how glad you are with the scale numbers.

Thank you for your very kind remarks about my tablescape. Yes, you can do just as well! This winter I will try lighting my candles. I haven't before. It will be a while because we are having temps in the 90's. You were so encouraging with your kind comments.

I'll have to remember the copper penny tip.

How nice of your kitty to leave you a present. We used to have a library cat where I work - one day, when many librarians from surrounding towns were coming for a meeting, he decided to leave dead mice on the sidewalks outside. There were two or three of them! I had to find a very large leaf which I picked them up with, and threw them into the bushes!

Nancy's Notes said...

Great copper penny tip! I had forgotten that one, thanks for the reminder. Aww, hate those darn sniffles, everything is not quite up to par when you are in this state of misery. Hope you are on your way to recovering soon. By the way, woo hoo for your blooms that have sprouted out!

Hope you get feeling better soon, no fair getting a cold in the summer. Thanks for the penny tip, I can't wait to test it out.

Lovely photos! Mittens looks so sweet (except for the dead mouse offering!) Well done for the 2.5lb loss thanks to the sniffles! There has to be some bonus for the suffering! Very posh oven mitts, will you dare to use them?! Mine always seem to touch the food I'm removing from the oven! Thanks for the copper coin tip for the flowers. I'm going to try that!
Have a lovely week!

Hope you are feeling better soon. I have had horrible allergies...even with the rains. My peony plant does quite well I just wish the blooms would last longer. Maybe you are cutting the bush down too much in the fall. Love your new oven mits! Thanks for stopping by.

I can't wait to see your peoni flowering - it is such a beautiful flower.

Dear Fiona,
Beautiful photos.
Thanks for the tip for the flowers.
The same happen to my peonies, but this year mine have buds too.
I asked two gardeners what I did wrong, one said that's the way nature is,
the other said I may have planted them to deep. But this year they'll bloom.
I've given up understanding why they don't bloom every year.
Hope you are feeling better now.

I will try the copper coin tip! Thanks! I have a peony that I planted 3 or 4 years ago...it still hasn't bloomed yet. I've heard it can take up to 7 years to mature enough to bloom. :( Glad yours finally bloomed, that gives me hope for mine! haha
